The facility of e-Payment is provided to the tax payers by the income tax department making payment through internet banking or credit card or debit card. To make e-payment of tax is mandatory for all persons whose accounts are to be audited under section 44AB and all companies.

PROCEDURE FOR PAYING INCOME TAX ONLINE

  1. Log on to or
  2. Click e-PAY TAXES.
  3. A screen will appear which will display the name of banks which provide e-payment facility.
  4. Click ‘Please Click Here’ at the end of list.
  5. Click on applicable challan i.e. Challan No. 280 or 281 of 282.
  6. The relevant challan shall appear on the screen.
  7. In case of payment made by companies, select code (0020).
  8. In case of payment by other tax payers, select code (0021).
  9. Enter the data (1) PAN, (2) Name and address of the Tax payer with PIN code, (3) Assessment Year, (4) Type of payment. The tax payer must be sure regarding the PAN number. Suppose, if the wrong PAN is given then the amount shall be credited in the account of whose number you have given by mistake.
  10. Select the name of bank from the drop down provided.
  11. Click the ‘Proceed’ button. A confirmation screen will appear displaying the contents entered along with ‘Name’ appearing in the database of the Income Tax Department with respect to PAN entered.
  12. If you find any mistake then click the ‘edit’ button and you find everything in order then click ‘Submit’ button. You will be directed to the net banking site of the bank.
  13. Write the ‘User ID’ and ‘Password’, provided by your bank. The particulars entered by you, will be displayed again.
  14. Enter the amount of tax to be paid with exact details of income tax, surcharge, interest, penalty, education cess etc.
  15. Select the bank account number from where income tax is supposed to be paid.
  16. Proceed by confirmation the payment. The bank will process the transaction online by debiting the bank indicated by you and a challan which can be printed. Challan contains the Challan Identification Number (CIN), payment details, bank’s name and BSR code through which e-payment has been made
